Historical Curiosities
The Thracian(lat. Thrax) was a gladiator ofancient Rome, known for his unique fighting style and distinctive helmet. This athlete fought without protection, was armed only with a short sword and defensive head armor. The most famous Thracian gladiator is Spartacus who led the third servile war.
The helmet had a characteristic shape, with a hemispherical cap with a wide brim that also protected the face and a griffin on the top, a mythological animal with the head of a bird of prey and the body of a lion.
