In a well-known book of the time we read:

 "...while Trimalchio was being led away, a player with a tiny flute approached his head, and as if I were speaking secretly in his ear, he played for him all the way. Behind us came, already sated with refinements , together with Agamemnon. Above the threshold hung a golden cage with a colorful magpie inside that greeted the guests. I was looking at these things in amazement, when I had to jump back so suddenly that for a moment I broke my leg on the left, and near the doorman's lodge, a large dog tied to a chain, painted on the wall that seemed to be alive, with the writing underneath in all capital letters: BEWARE My companions were laughing..."
