Historical Curiosities

Gian Lorenzo Bernini sculpted "Apollo and Daphne" between 1622 and 1625. The work represents a masterpiece of Italian Baroque, exemplifying the dynamism and emotion typical of the period.

The legend of Apollo and Daphne is one of the most fascinating myths of Greek mythology, narrated in Ovid's "Metamorphoses". Apollo, god of light and the arts, falls madly in love with Daphne, a woodland nymph. However, Daphne does not reciprocate Apollo's feelings and, to escape his embrace, she asks her father, the river god Peneus, to transform her into a laurel tree.

The sculpture represents the moment in which Daphne begins to change, with her hands turning into branches and her legs into roots, while Apollo looks at her with desperation and amazement.
